Torontos 500px got its popular photo sharing iPhone app back on the iTunes App Store today, following a takedown that Apple said stemmed from multiple user complaints about pornographic material. The app returns with an age-gate warning, advising that the content in the app is for 17+ audiences, and also adds a new Report Photo button to help users quickly tag things they find offensive for potential removal from the network.
The app still has a category for Nude photos for logged in users, however, which is an impressive allowance on Apples part. Perhaps the company is realizing that it should be rethinking how its no-porn policy works in the wake of Vines unfortunate Editors Pick incident, and the general porn problem that network faces.
The age restriction warning isnt a favorite thing among developers, Ive been told, since it has the potential to scare off users who might be easily ruffled by potentially offensive content, but at least 500px is back. I contacted 500px co-founder Oleg Gutsol about the restoration of the app, and he said in an email that theyve worked closely with Apple over the last week to address their requests.
Gutsol says that theyve conducted their own internal content audit and have found no pornographic images, and so didnt have to take any content down from the site. Theyre still waiting to see specific images or complaints received by Apple to try to track down the offending images. He says theyve made a few modifications to the app other than those mentioned above, including ensuring that all adult content is clearly tagged and harder to stumble upon, and making changes to search term filters.
