IT is the song that is the talk of Tamworth for more than one reason.
Country singer Melody Pool penned a Taylor Swift-style breakup song after her country music boyfriend allegedly cheated on her with an even bigger country music starlet. And it has proved sweet revenge for Pool after the singer was last week crowned Best Songwriter at Tamworth's Telstra Road To Discovery for her heartbreaking song "Henry".
"Henry, I believed, was the love of my life," Pool said.
"He just turned out to be a different person to who he made out he was.
"It's been the worst thing I've gone through. I never thought (this could happen) when we were together because it just seemed like 'this was it' and 'I don't have to search anymore'."
But the talented 21-year-old, from Kurri Kurri in the Hunter Valley, refused to reveal who her emotional ballad was about other than to reluctantly admit that Henry was, in fact, "a real person".
"I feel uncomfortable about naming them," she said.
"I don't care about her but, as much as he hurt me, I don't want to mess with his career."
It was a bittersweet moment when Pool was announced the winner of the annual talent quest for the heartfelt song, before giving a stoic performance in front of the alleged "other woman".
"It was actually really hard to (maintain composure) because I hadn't seen him (that night) but I'd seen her so I was quite shaken and I was feeling the song more on that night than I ever had," she said.
"It was really confronting because I was in front of this huge audience and I was thinking to myself 'don't you dare break down'.
"When I sang it and after my name was announced, the Telstra representative said 'it was amazing how much rage was filled in your performance'."
Henry is off her debut album, The Hurting Scene, to be released next month (February 23).
"I actually wrote that song in 15 minutes, not thinking hardly anything of it because I was writing and crying and being a bit of a girl," Pool said.
"Then I played it for my mum and dad and they got really emotional.
"It just seems to be the song that gets the biggest response from people when I play it."
The country-folk singer would not confirm the song's back-story but her raw lyrics reveal her real-life agony at being betrayed by her first true love.
"Trust me, I wouldn't take you back in a heartbeat," she sings.
"And mostly, I lie awake at night with my rage.
"You loved me so, though you strayed, yes I know and frankly I'm straying now."
Pool said discovering the deceit was "the worst thing I've gone through".
"I was just feeling pretty worthless at that time. I think it's the lowest I've ever been at," she said.
"So now it's still rough. I think I'm over the shock because I'm not so freaked out all the time but I'm still quite down."
Having to see the alleged perpetrators of her pain at Tamworth did not help.
"It was OK but I choose to turn my back quite a lot because it hurts me too much to engage in it," she said.
"I know that he has a lot of remorse and is feeling a lot of guilt and so he should.
"I had to see them both while I was at Tamworth and it did take its toll to have them both in the same room as me."
